I'm considering picking up some RML Snowflakes, problem is I don't know if they will fit under the mk1. Anyone know if 15x8's will be an easy fit or will they be to wide to work?

15x8 et 30 will fit under a Mk1 (*with coilovers). You'll want a 5mm spacer in the rear for proper stance/fitment.
*Not sure if stock spring size will clear.

The thing to be aware of is the spring diameter. Coilovers have a 2.5" Inner Diameter (ID), whereas stock springs are somewhere around 5"-6". If the offset is too low you'll hit the spring.

You'll probably notice a huge loss of power and mileage with those.. i'd still do it tho

can't lose much power…wasn't much there to begin with and not to worried about the mileage either, its not my daily…anyway the rack can't help with that either
anyone know the length of the stock mk1 lugs? I think its 28mm but haven't found anywhere to confirm that

On my 85 Scirocco I have 15X7.5 with 42mm offset.
Up front required a 3mm spacer to clear the strut body. That makes it effectively 39mm offset. If I add 0.5" to the outside of the wheel (to create an 8" width) the center of the wheel moves out 0.25". This would reduce the offset to 32.65mm. My wheels are just a fuzz less than flush with the fender. If they were 8" wide with a 30mm offset, they would poke just a little.
Out back required an 8mm spacer to clear the springs (stock diameter lowering springs). That makes the offset 34mm. Doing the same math as above yields an 8" wheel with a 27.65mm offset. Even at 8" I would still have plenty of fender clearance.
In summary, you will probably have to roll/pull the front fenders, but won't need any spacer for strut clearance. You'll be fine on the rears with coilovers.

I put Rota RBs on my mk1 gti 15x8 et 35 with 195/45-15 toyos. I had good clearance everywhere except the rear beam. 5mm may have done it but I went with 10mm spacers in the rear. With that it only occasionally rubbed the outside of the rear tire. My fenders had been rolled at some point so that probably helped and not being all that low did too.
I have pics if you want to see the way it sits.
Edit: I remember now that all was good until I decided to rotate the tires and a wheel weight on the inner rim hit the strut housing.
Et 30 is probably easier to live with.

so I pulled the trigger and ordered these

Now I need to find some tires to put on 'em…any suggestions? a lot of people on vortex recommend 195/45-15's…that sound about right? or would another size be better?

sweet wheels man…they will always look good. et33 is about the max with coilovers for me on a 7 inch wheel.…springs give lots more. I have 195,50-15 now but will get the 45's next. Look forward to seeing them mounted.
